4-7-12 is an innovative project intended to bring a disruptive influence to bear on leadership, corporate strategy and management practice. Based on intensive primary research, 4-7-12 is aimed at a new generation of leaders, managers and thinkers who understand that change is the great imperative of our age and the essential component to building businesses and societies that are sustainable, resilient and transformative.
As it is presented in this draft prospectus, 4-7-12 is certainly an ambitious project. It is intended to be so. For ultimately, this project is defined by a vision of progress that is beyond current restrictions in thinking and practice.
There is always a beginning that changes everything. 4-7-12 is positioned at the fulcrum of this beginning. As much as we can identify anticipated outcomes of the project and its applications, the end is in the hands of those who apply it in their own lives and in their leadership of people, organizations and communities entrusted to them. For ultimately, 4-7-12 is but a design template that is shaped and completed by the dreams, hopes, inspiration and courage of those applying it.
That is why the motto behind 4-7-12 is Fabuli est Vestri – Latin for The Story is Yours. Every user of 4-7-12 is intended to be an active developer of the program, leading to collaborative communities of practitioners working together in a symphony of purpose and legacy-building. It is fundamental to the philosophy and pedagogy of 4-7-12 that this process of active engagement and collaboration is ultimately the transformative vehicle through which knowledge and personal experience combine to generate a transformative quality which we call wisdom. And wisdom, we may all agree, is itself a beginning that changes everything.
In a world defined by continual change and escalating uncertainty it is increasingly difficult for companies to predict the leadership qualities which will be required to sustain innovation and competitive advantage in the marketplace. But one certainty is that tomorrow’s leaders will think and act very differently to those of this generation.
Tomorrow’s leaders in business, education and society will have the mind of a design thinker, the awareness of a poet, and the heart of a revolutionary. Driven by profound changes in social needs and attitudes, tomorrow’s leaders will be more inclusive and expansive in their vision, more courageous and purposeful in their decisions, and provide greater direction and hope to a world in transition.
While corporate leadership today seems to be invested in avoiding controversy while carrying on with ‘business as usual’, tomorrow’s executives will be at the forefront of meaningful social change by directing the challenging conversations we need to have about our world and engaging others in those conversations. As with today’s leaders they will be technically competent and able to navigate complex risk environments. But beyond this, they will also have the skills required to give expression to fugitive hopes of lost generations. They will be defenders and enablers of mighty dreams. And above all, they will serve as bastions of character and values.
The traits and skills required for this type of leadership are not new. They have found expression in the visionary leadership of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and countless others before them. While embodying different styles and tactics to meet differing challenges, the most important quality shared by these leaders has been that of wisdom.
We believe that wisdom is the most important imperative of a new generation of leadership in business in society. Our mission is to facilitate the development of wisdom as a core vision and competency in enterprises, education, political institutions, sport and other social organizations. Using the framework of 4-7-12, our purpose is to promote the application of practical or actionable wisdom as a foundation for the sustainable development of people, business and community.
